Krylon Problems

I re-did my bar fridge door in a Popeye theme. I used Krylon paint for the 2 base colours. Light and dark blue. Looked great. UNTIL.... I sprayed Krylon Clear to finish it off .. There are several spots where the paint actually bubbled, as if you smeared paint remover all over it, in just seconds.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe there was some adhesive come off of the transfer tape when I pulled it off to clear coat.
What happened?????
Thanks for your help.

jrrdw is an unknown quantity at this point
Krylon makes different based paints and clears. Witch 2 did you use? Also maybe the spots that lifted wern't dry.

YES!!! That is exactly the results I have seen! I wished I remember the member that said it, but they were saying that the clear was sprayed on too thick.

I have not went back and verified this, but I have no reason to disbelieve them at all. I know I get too heavy handed with the spray can stuff.

I still think as jrrdw suggest, that some mixing of paints and clears are causing the issues, but since it only does it in some areas... I have no solid idea.

NOW, I like the Popeye!!!! I more relate to Whimpy, since I love hamburgers!!! Haha!
The whole popeye theme should look good!! I would like to see the end results.

this looks sorta like orange peel, which is a result of having your clear on too thick.
however this also looks like a solvent reaction between the two coats.

What about surface prep work? maybe if there was a factory finish that wasnt properly prepped?

best suggestion is DON'T use Krylon..
Second suggestion is you have to wait more than 3 days for the chemicals to release.. most kylon is a enamel based, non hardened paint.. It is dry to the touch in a couple of hours, but it skins over and you get solvents waiting to outgas.. when you cleared it the clear solvents went under the skin, and tryed to lift the first base colors.. so you are back to the drawing board.. if you are going to use krylon get ready for the wait.. Primo..

so if I use krylon or other rattle can for my base colors, I should wait a few days before painting on it?

Yeah, Primo nailed this one. It's your coating times. Spray paint can cure for up to a week. That's why it smells so bad after you paint something with spray paint, even a day or 2 later. It's still curing......

Look at the coating times on the bottle. I can guarantee it says something like all coats within an hour, then wait a week before spraying clear.

The clearcoat "spidered" as the curing paint released chemicals into the clearcoat. There's good news though. Your project is probably fine. Most times you can carefully sand down the messed up clear without messing up the design. Then make sure it's been a week at least and clearcoat again.

This is a remarkably common problem but it took me like 3 weeks to figure it out when it first happened to me because no one talked about it online (like 3 years ago). Now most of the posts you find when you search for this problem are of me explaining what it is......

I hope this helps. Don't worry you'll only make that mistake once. Now that you know what it is.

Tony D.
